Growing Your Potential (for Park Volunteers)

Are you looking for in-depth training and support? Want to meet, network, and learn with a dynamic group of dedicated volunteers?

Do you have a specific project in mind you want to develop for the benefit of your park or park group?

Don’t miss this unique, exciting opportunity. Apply to Partnerships Academy today!

Partnerships Academy: Growing Your Potential is a free fellowship program that supports community-based parks groups and individual volunteers to achieve sustainable success through in-depth project and group development. Fellows learn new skills, network and share best practices, hear from experienced resource speakers, and are eligible for a selective mini-grants program. All sessions are tailored to fit the unique needs of park-based projects and volunteers.

Session topics include creating a mission and vision; developing an action or work plan; approaching and pitching to potential local or funding partners; working with the media and elected officials; website implementation; and group dynamics and project leadership.

After completing the yearlong Academy program, fellows will receive exclusive access to future events and workshops, and will become part of an ever-growing network of dedicated community leaders.

Examples of potential projects*
These are a few examples of projects that fellows from previous classes have or are working on:

  • Forming a group of community members to develop programming in a park or playground.
  • Partnering with biking organizations to raise awareness of alternative transportation options and their impacts on parks.
  • Launching innovative waterfront activities to educate about and encourage sustainable usage of NYC waterways.

*Do not feel limited by these ideas - Be creative!

Testimonials:

"It’s been encouraging to meet and exchange ideas with people from across the city who are hard at work, and succeeding, at turning parks into vital centers and real resources for their communities."
"I found every Academy session fascinating and inspiring. The speakers, other groups in the Academy, and the Parks and City professionals we got to meet and work with made me feel fortunate to live in the greatest city on earth. It was a joy to be with so many selfless individuals working to make our communities even more vibrant."
"So often the average citizen feels that getting anything done that involves the city means lots and lots or red tape, and you hardly get to see the city and its institutions for what they're made up of: people! Partnerships Academy is all about giving those institutions a human face, and probably one of the most generous gifts to the people of NYC for making the most of their communities. It gives people the tools they need to open a meaningful dialogue with the city."
