Innovative Projects & Initiatives

We have developed a number of initiatives that help park users and decision makers to connect, work together, and exchange information that will eventually lead to a shared vision of parks as vital centers of community life.

Two examples of this work are:

Immigrants & Parks Collaborative: Recognizing that parks are the democratic spaces of a city and are essential to a vibrant and inclusive community life, The Immigrants & Parks Collaborative works to develop specific strategies to engage new immigrants to create healthier, safer, more inclusive public space for all New Yorkers to enjoy. In conjunction with the New York Immigration Coalition, and through the generosity of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, we support the efforts of a number of community-based organizations in carrying out the daily activities that connect immigrants with their local parks.

People Make Parks: Partnerships for Parks sees community involvement in capital projects as a portal to long-term, sustainable community stewardship. The People Make Parks initiative helps communities participate in the design of their parks in an ongoing, collaborative way. Working with Hester Street Collaborative, we will outline the steps in the capital process, from fundraising to ribbon-cutting, and the optimal moments for informed, effective involvement.

Catalyst for Neighborhood Parks is a multi-year initiative, working in historically under-served neighborhoods, that galvanizes support for and commitments to:

  • physical renovations of the parks;
  • sports, arts, and education programming;
  • local parks stewardship;
  • and collaborative work amongst the partners, including those between the communities and municipal agencies.
